The reasons given were more like &quot;How could a carpenter turned clockmaker possibly solve the problem that the Astronomy Board couldn&#039;t?&quot; Besides, keeping it secret implies that the British were using it, but they didn&#039;t start using it for decades after it was proven to work.</description>
